Our ministries come at no cost to those who receive them, and they are given with no intention of receiving in return. The Gospel is free, and so we offer it freely, through the proclamation of the Word, the celebration of the Sacraments, growing as disciples, and serving others. Those who attend our worship services or participate in other activities are not expected to give, and there is no expected percentage or amount one is required to give.
However, we must recognize the reality that our ability to minister is ultimately dependent on God's providence, particularly as it comes through the financial contributions of our members and friends. And so we offer opportunities to use what we have been given to bless others and to build up the body of Christ here in Bessemer and throughout the world, as one feels led.
With that in mind, we understand giving as more than just balancing the books. The Bible teaches us that the earth is the Lord's and everything in it (Ps. 24). Everything we have is a gift from God, given to us for the purpose of having life and giving life to others. One way, then, that we grow in our faith and we worship God is to consider in our hearts and minds how we might use what we've been given to live into that reality. So when one gives financially to support the church and it's mission, it is ultimately an act of worship and devotion to God, as well as a desire to bless others. As the author of Hebrews tells us, "Don't forget to do good and to share what you have because God is pleased with these kinds of sacrifices" (Heb. 13:16). Words like "offering" and "sacrifice" imply giving up something for a greater purpose and a greater honor. When one gives sacrificially, joyfully and willfully, as one has decided in their own mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion (2 Cor. 9:6-7), we know that God is pleased and his work is furthered. What is more, because this is true, our session, our members and our pastor together seek to use our funds in ways that are most honoring to our Lord and to the Scriptures, and to in return, share generously with others to the best of our ability. In short, it's one part of the cycle of blessing and sharing, so that in the end, the love of Jesus Christ is made real and known in our lives and in the lives of those whom we support.
